About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Elektron is a periodical free open access journal of the Electronic Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires. The aim of the journal is to create a space for dissemination and discussion on the scientific and technological aspects of electronics engineering, bioengineering, mechatronics, telecommunications, optoelectronics, computing and information technology. The publication is aimed at the general public interested in the development and applications of new electronic technologies and provides a place to encourage interaction between members of the community.
Elektron publishes in-depth peer-reviewed content in spanish, portuguese or english on different topics related to electronic engineering such as telecommunications, automation and control, computer science, signal processing, optoelectronics, microelectronics, acoustics, audio and bioengineering.
Publication is biannual (2 issues per year) and the evaluation and publication of each article takes around one month. The collection includes publication of special numbers dedicated to congresses of certain specialities of engineering.
For all contributions the acceptance criteria are quality, originality, and scientific and technological relevance to the field. An adequate referencing to the state-of-the-art is essential.
Peer Review Process
Articles submitted to Elektron are subjected to a process of peer review by specialized independent referees. The referee’s anonymity is respected.
The referees receive a form where they must state whether the work is or is not publishable in Elektron. The analysis will consist of the following:
- Establishing whether purposes, starting points, methodology and results of work are described in the text in a way understandable for a researcher working on the subject or related topics.
- Detecting the possible presence of insurmountable errors, that is, such as to nullify the validity of the work exposed in a whole or in essential parts.
- Establishing if the work contributes sufficient volume of news that deserves its publication.
In the form the referees will indicate, when the work is publishable: it does not require changes; minor changes are required (typographical errors or similar) or needs a review by the authors. For works considered non-publishable, they should clarify if there is plagiarism or if the text is obscure / ambiguous / inconsistent or if it is not clear: purposes / starting points / methodologies / results or if there are insurmountable errors that invalidate the work or essential parts or finally if there is absence of new contributions not trivial with respect to what has already been published.
In case of controversy the editors will decide the steps to follow. The final decision on publication of a manuscript is the sole responsibility of the editors.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Publication ethics
Elektron is committed to meeting and upholding standards of ethical behavior at all stages of the publication process. Elektron follows the actions recommended by the Committee On Publication Ethics (http://publicationethics.org). Below is a summary of its key expectations of editors, peer-reviewers and authors.
Authors' responsibilities:
1. To maintain accurate records of data associated with their submitted manuscript, and to supply or provide access to these data, on reasonable request.
2. To confirm/assert that the manuscript as submitted is not under consideration or accepted for publication elsewhere. Where portions of the content overlap with published or submitted content, to acknowledge and cite those sources. Additionally, to provide the editor with a copy of any submitted manuscript that might contain overlapping or closely related content.
3. To confirm that all the work in the submitted manuscript is original and to acknowledge and cite content reproduced from other sources. To obtain permission to reproduce any content from other sources.
4. To declare any potential conflicts of interest (e.g. where the author has a competing interest that could be considered or viewed as exerting an undue influence on his or her duties at any stage during the publication process).
5. To notify promptly the journal editor or publisher if a significant error in their publication is identified. To cooperate with the editor and publisher to publish an erratum, addendum, corrigendum notice, or to retract the paper, when necessary.
6. To ensure that all co-authors had the opportunity to revise the manuscript, had agreed to its submission to Elektron and had accepted responsibility for the work reported.
7. To not breach any copyright. When reproducing figures, significant portions of text and/or schemes from previous publications, it is the authors' responsibility to seek appropriate permission from the relevant publishers. Authors must declare all sources of funding for the work in the manuscript, and also to declare any conflict of interest.
Reviewers’ responsibilities:
1. To treat the assigned manuscript as confidential. In the case that a reviewer wishes to seek opinion from a colleague, approval from the editor in charge of the manuscript has to be obtained in advance and the name of the person to be consulted informed.
2. To inform with no delay if she/he is unable to do the review timely.
3. To inform the editor if any conflict of interest exist or can be foreseen. Reviewers must not accept to review manuscripts of close collaborators.
4. Not to take advantage of the data reported in a manuscript while it is under review or if the manuscript is not published.
5. To give an objective justified report written in a respectful style in a timely manner. Foreseen delays have to be informed to the editor in charge of the manuscript.
6. To inform the editor in charge of the manuscript if: (i) there is a suspicion of plagiarism, (ii) there are indications of fabricated or manipulated data, (iii) there seem to exist an unusual text recycling (copy from the author's previous work).
Editors’ Responsibilities:
1. To contribute to the decision-making process, and to assist in improving the quality of the published paper by reviewing the manuscript objectively.
2. To maintain the confidentiality of any information supplied by author.
3. To be aware of any potential conflicts of interest (financial, institutional, collaborative or other relationships between the reviewer and author).
4. Not take advantage of the data of an article under review
5. To give authors a reasonable opportunity to respond to any complaints. All complaints should be investigated no matter when the original publication was approved.
6. To preserve the identities of reviewers.
7. To treat fairly any author's request for reconsideration of a rejected manuscript.
Suspected plagiarism in a submitted manuscript
In this case, Elektron follows the actions recommended by the Committee On Publication Ethics (https://doi.org/10.24318/cope.2019.2.1). To detect plagiarism, the reviewers are free to use the tool they want. Elektron recommends the use of free online programs available on the internet. If a high possibility of plagiarism is confirmed, an interaction will be carried out with the author of the submission, so that it can be duly clarified. In case of not having an answer from the involved author, communication will be established with the institution, to which the author belongs, in order to carry out an investigation of the case.
Self plagiarism
Self plagiarism is presented when an author republishes his article without significant changes or publishing it in different languages, without any reference to the original article, in order to present it in different publications. The Elektron Journal does not approve this behavior nor will it accept that the authors carry out this type of action. Articles that complete or are part of the same research will not be considered self-plagiarism and the author so declares it by citing the source.
Competing Interest Guidelines
This must be stated in all articles. If there are no conflicts it must specify: “The authors state that there are no conflicts of interest in preparing the manuscript”. There is a conflict of interest when the author has or had financial or personal relationships that could have or have inappropriately biased or influenced his/her actions. A potential conflict of interests exists regardless of whether or not the interested parties may consider that these do not have an influence on their scientific judgment. The authors should state in the “Conflicts of interest” (step 3 “Enter metadata”, see “Manuscript submission” chapter), any financial or personal relationships they had or may have with individuals or institutions at the time of writing the article and that could pose a conflict of interests as regards the article. They should mention, where applicable, the involvement of the sources of funding (section “Contributors and Supporting Agencies", step 3 “Enter metadata”, see “Manuscript submission” chapter) in the design of the study, collection of data, the analysis or interpretation of these data in the preparation of the manuscript or in the decision to submit the article for publication. If the funding sources have not had any involvement, the following sentence should be used; “The funding sources have not taken part in the design of the study, collection of data, the analysis or interpretation of these data in the preparation of the manuscript or in the decision to submit the article for publication”. Whatever is declared will appear in the printed journal.
Frequency of publication
The Elektron Journal is a biannual publication. However, authors can submit their work at any time of the year. There are two cut-off dates, June 15 for the number corresponding to the first semester and December 15 for the number for the second semester.
Accepted Article Types
Elektron accepts 7 article types.
1) Original Research
This is the most common type of journal manuscript used to publish full reports of data from research. It may be called an Original Article, Research Article, Research, or just Article, depending on the journal. The Original Research format is suitable for many different fields and different types of studies. It includes full Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections.
2) Short reports or Letters
These papers communicate brief reports of data from original research that editors believe will be interesting to many researchers, and that will likely stimulate further research in the field. As they are relatively short the format is useful for scientists with results that are time sensitive (for example, those in highly competitive or quickly-changing disciplines). This format often has strict length limits, so some experimental details may not be published until the authors write a full Original Research manuscript. These papers are also sometimes called Brief communications.
3) Review Articles
Review Articles provide a comprehensive summary of research on a certain topic, and a perspective on the state of the field and where it is heading. They are often written by leaders in a particular discipline after invitation from the editors of a journal. Reviews are often widely read (for example, by researchers looking for a full introduction to a field) and highly cited. Reviews commonly cite approximately 100 primary research articles.
4) Methodologies or Methods
These articles present a new experimental method, test or procedure. The method described may either be completely new, or may offer a better version of an existing method. The article should describe a demonstrable advance on what is currently available.
5) Technical reports
These manuscript are formal reports designed to convey technical information in a clear and easily accessible format. They are typically divided into sections which allow different readers to access different levels of information. A technical report (also scientific report) is a document that describes the process, progress, or results of technical or scientific research or the state of a technical or scientific research problem. It might also include recommendations and conclusions of the research.
6) Research in Engineering Education
These articles should give visibility to development work in engineering teaching, with references to educational innovation or closely related work to the development of teaching materials. Moreover, it is intended to disseminate research work in engineering education, involving reasoning issues and novel educational research methodology relevant to the teaching of engineering.
7) Student articles
Student researchers strive to be successful at publications; and with Elektron, students aspiring to publish will receive scholarly feedback once their submission is reviewed. These feedbacks will not only help authors identify areas of improvement to their submission but help them better understand the process in order to be successful at publication. Once published, it will provide a global platform for them to showcase their work.
